In Huckleberry Finn, the hero, Huck, goes on a journey down the Mississippi River, with a slave named Jim. As he journeys Huck gets to learn a lot astir(predicate) life. He learns about slavery, trust, death and all these lessons help him to improve as a man and also helps him to mature as a man. He learns to listen to his conscience. Conscience says to me What had low Miss Watson done t o you, that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word? What did that abject old woman do to you, that you could treat her so mean... I got to feeling so mean and so miserable I most wished I was d.o.a. (Twain, 1985, chap.16). Asher Lev, the hero of My name is Asher Lev, unlike Huck does not go on any journey in the literal sense. Asher through his paintings throws light on what has been occurrent to him in life. We get to see a journey of his life through his art. Austens heroine, Emma Woodhouse too does not set out on a journey in the real sense. The story is all about the journey Emma makes to enter womanhood and how she matures psychologically after marriage.
